If you were raised in the South, you likely had these potatoes a few times a month. It’s still a dish I crave today!

A staple of Southern American cuisine, stewed potatoes provide comfort with their rich flavors. In the rural South, where ingredients were cheap and plentiful, this recipe was born out of a need for hearty, flavorful meals. Traditionally, potatoes are stewed in a flavorful broth with herbs and spices until they are soft. Because everything cooks at a low temperature, the flavors combine to create a rich and filling meal.
There are many other sides that go well with this tasty Southern stewed potatoes dish. Cornbread, with its somewhat sweet and crumbly texture, is a classic complement that goes well with the savory and rich potatoes. Another popular option is collard greens cooked with bacon or smoked ham hocks. The somewhat bitter flavors of the greens complement the creamy stewed potatoes. For an extra burst of flavor, try this entrée with a side salad of crisp greens dressed with acidic vinaigrette.
Things needed:
