Chocolate Depression Cake

The Great Depression is the inspiration for this chocolate cake recipe. For people who have food allergies, this Crazy Cake (or Wacky Cake) is perfect since it doesn't include any eggs or dairy.

For those with dietary restrictions, there is an egg-and dairy-free Chocolate Depression Cake, which is also called a Wacky Cake or Crazy Cake.
All three sets of grandparents were born in 1917 or 1918. They were of an age to comprehend the rationale behind rationing and the lack of many modern conveniences when the Great Depression struck.  Since they had to learn to live without the conveniences of modern life, they began drinking their coffee black.

It's interesting, since I don't recall them mentioning that era as difficult at all. They were teenagers at the time. Their tales of trudging through the snow to go to school and pitching in with household duties stick clearly in my mind. Only a radio to pass the time in the evenings; no television.

For those with dietary restrictions, there is an egg-and dairy-free Chocolate Depression Cake, which is also called a Wacky Cake or Crazy Cake.
The ideals of that period were so simple, and I sometimes envy them. Priorities of family, religion, and labor.
